When I was a kid, my dreams were to grow up and become a zoologist. I loved animals; I would go to the library weekly to gather books and more books about all variety of animals. I was also a member of the World Wildlife Fund. Anyway, one creature that really fascinated me was the Tasmanian Tiger, for the main reason that it had become extinct so recently and in a time when humans could have prevented it.

Exploding Heads is a series by Andrea Wan, where she beautifully illustrates various extinct creatures exploding from the porcelain faces of young men and women. It’s rather odd, but lovely and allows my mind to travel back in time for a bit. Dodo-AndreaWan Moa-AndreaWan Quagga-AndreaWan Mammoth-AndreaWan

I’ve been a fan of Lilli Carré’s style of illustration ever since I purchased her 2008 graphic novel The Lagoon. However, in this post I would like to feature these lovely detailed pieces from Lilli’s Debris Paintings series. A mix of abstract shapes, lines, and dots, these paintings remind me of the work of bookbinder Edgar Mansfield.

The Secret Knots is a series from illustrator Yina Kim. In this series, Yina creates portraits of strangers whom she studies in public spaces, giving each a tagline describing their imaginary lives. Although Yina does not know any of her subjects personally, she feels that unconsciously we all are connected in secret knots. donna-yinakim louis-yinakim timothy-yinakim jean-yinakim

Rachel Levit is another artist recently featured on Buy Some Damn Art. Her work varies in style across different mediums from painting to illustration to digital. The soft faces of her characters cast a poetic gaze onto the viewer under the stroke of a brush.

Taking inspiration from a love for nature and classic video games, Laura Bifano paints polygonal animals out in the wild in the series Menagerie. Laura’s work has a very whimsical, fairy-tale like quality, very soft and nostalgic.

Bob Waardenburg draws out these complicated geometric illustrations as a critique on society. Exploring our obsession with growing technologies while losing a relationship with reality, perhaps causing fear. Either way these drawings are impressive and offer a bit of optical illusion.
