  1. Artist: Michael C. Hsiung

September 9, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Bearded mermen, horned creatures and bears, oh my! The world created by the hand of Michael C. Hsiung is wonderfully skewed and filled with an odd assortment of mythical creatures. Each piece is paired with an equally charming (and sometimes lengthy) title, for example the last piece on the left: On the lesser known labors of Sir Anthony of Tuscany and how the exodus of the Lithuanian bears began counters the piece on the bottom right: On the Lithuanian bear’s revenge against the sons of Sir Anthony of Tuscany. And yes, he finds drawing hair to be therapeutic.

  2. Artist: Matt Wisniewski

September 5, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Matt Wisniewski creates the most alluring portraits by integrating gleaming landscapes and natural forms in a manner that distorts and accentuates the human figure. Matt’s collaged portraits are a result of images collected of a variety of sources, all of which he’s willing to share, plus you can buy prints of his work. Although I wish the image above (from his Mineral Minds series) was available; a wonderful collection of images and color coming together to create this pensive character that reminds me of a synchronized swimmer.

  3. Artist: Michael Cina

August 26, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

The Ghostly Store offers another great visual artist. Michael Cina uses acrylic paint in a most unusual way, creating soft images packed with vivid colors which move across the canvas mimicking the effects of marbling; images that could be mistaken for interstellar clouds of dust.

  4. Artist: Jason Hackenwerth

August 22, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

These gigantic protozoa-like monsters are every balloon animal’s nightmare. Jason Hackenwerth creates these amazingly colorful and complex creatures out of ordinary balloons. There something unsettling about these magnified bacteria looming about in public spaces and chasing children around (but in the end there diminished size will betray this aggressive behavior).

  5. Artist: Jenni Rope

August 17, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Jenni Rope works in various mediums taking color and shapes inspired by man-built structures and nature to create abstract landscapes. And if you squint your eyes, your mind begins to develop the scene. Throughout her work the same shapes begin to appear as if characters themselves, escaping the canvas and showing up in her drawings, sculptures and animations. The hand of the artist is apparent throughout her work creating movement and texture.

See what happens when Jenni’s shapes come to life in this great little animation title Kiipeilypuu/The Climbing Tree.

  6. Artist: Becca Stadtlander

August 15, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

As an illustrator, Becca Stadtlander creates images worth more than just a thousand words. She develops scenes and characters of magic and intrigue. Plus her sense of color is magnificent; she can flood an image with warm tones without it being harsh or over baring (see Living Room below). As a bonus you can purchase prints of her originals through her Etsy shop.

  7. Around Town: Os Gêmeos Mural

August 11, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

As you emerge from the South Station tunnel, your eyes are instantly directed towards Dewey Square Plaza where a 70’x70′ mural has been painted on the Air Intake Structure. Brazilian twin brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo (better known as Os Gêmeos) created this mural as an extension to their exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Greatly inspired by the color and chaos of Brazil, Os Gêmeos also draw from their own dreams when developing their yellow-skinned characters covered in brightly mismatched clothes donning whimsical hats, colorful hoods or scarves.  In this mural, the character is squeezed into the unusual shape of the structure between the bustling city and towering buildings. Os Gêmeos hope their mural will bring color and energy to the streets of Boston, while inspiring curiosity and imagination.  I think they have succeeded wonderfully, it’s such a treat to see this brightly colored being as I travel to and from the bindery.

Check out their website for a video and photographs of the various stages during the painting of the mural.

  8. Artist: Ariana Page Russell

August 9, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Ariana Page Russell uses her body’s hypersensitive skin in her photo series appropriately titled ‘Skin‘.  Ariana possesses a condition known as dermatographia, where her immune system releases excessive amounts of histamine causing her skin to welt up for around thirty minutes from the lightest of scratches.  This conditions allows Ariana to use her body in a way many of us cannot, therefore creating some of the most unique images.

Ariana also photographs her flushing skin, using the images to create wallpaper installations and temporary tattoos.  In her photo series ‘Save Face‘ she applies the tattoos on various areas of the body to explore the concept of augmenting one’s identity.

  9. Artist: Andy Gilmore

August 8, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Over at The Ghostly Store, you’ll find an array of manly tech gear to vinyls to Andy Gilmore. His prints are kaleidoscopic masterpieces in which the shapes grow infinitely smaller and smaller over a bed of soft and saturated hues; all creating an atmosphere that parallels astronomical forces in the grandest scale.

  10. Artist: Liam Stevens

August 6, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Armed with a Pentel 0.7mm mechanical pencil, pile of colored paper and scalpel, Liam Stevens uses these basic materials to create images through expressive lines and shapes.  Liam’s impeccable skill at illustration and shading invites the viewer into these 2-dimensional worlds of whimsical realism.

Liam further explores his creativity by transforming his flat drawings into interactive scenes in this animated music video for My Robot Friend.
