Take Me was the graduating piece by Alice Wells, where she invited guests to stoop over a long white bench and sift through a pile of little plastic pieces. Each piece ranged in size and captured Alice in various garments and poses. As a part of the piece, guests were asked to pluck as many Alices from the pile as desired. I grabbed two myself and turned them into a pair of earrings.

Artist: Lauren Clay

This new work from Lauren Clay is just fantastic! These large wall pieces are made from wood, paper mache and layers of acrylic paint and remind me a bit of Gak, that awesome putty goop stuff from those Nickelodeon commercials. Lauren’s portfolio is filled with large-scale sculptural work, some of which I featured last year here.

I’ve been a fan of Lilli Carré’s style of illustration ever since I purchased her 2008 graphic novel The Lagoon. However, in this post I would like to feature these lovely detailed pieces from Lilli’s Debris Paintings series. A mix of abstract shapes, lines, and dots, these paintings remind me of the work of bookbinder Edgar Mansfield.

In the series One Third, Photographer Klaus Pichler arranged rotting food in elaborate still lifes as a reflection on a UN study claiming that one third of the world’s food goes to waste. Although there is mold and fuzz and maggots, these images are oddly beautiful.

My husband and I recently took up watercolor as a hobby. Jason has been creating these imaginative and celestial pieces by layering pigment on his ink drawings. I, on the other hand, am still trying to figure out how to paint with watercolors. However, Andrea Shear is quite talented with watercolor. She has a real eye for layering color creating depth in shadows and highlights.

The work of Lori Larusso is a bit peculiar, as are her choices of restricting the viewer. Lori isolates a space which accentuates the angles and guides our eyes to more unusual focal points.

Maryrose Watson has amassed an impressive portfolio. Working off the loom, Maryrose builds complex geometric forms using her own mathematical formula. By wrapping the warp and weft simultaneously the frame is slowly concealed while revealing a design altered as the viewer moves around the piece.

Over at Hideous Things. you will find things that are not so hideous. The artwork of Chelsey Pettyjohn may not seem beautiful to everyone, but I find a certain attraction to her heavy brushstrokes and thick application of paint. The unusual color choices for skin tone are intriguing and the coarse stare of her characters are perfect in her Commandments series.
