  1. Artist: Sarah Blood

November 28, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Employing the technology of luminous gas and glass, Sarah Blood creates minimalistic sculpture work with neon lamps and concrete. Her work is absolutely stunning and bleak, aggressively combining two very different materials.

  2. Artist: Amy Friend

November 28, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

In the series Dare alla Luce artist Amy Friend adds life to vintage photographs by introducing strategically placed bursts of light. These haunting images transform our view of photography, appearing almost as archaic stellar maps.

  3. Photographer: Leila Jeffreys

November 28, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

When I was a child, my Nana owned a cockatiel just like Jarra (photo above, right) named Vito. We taught him to say ‘pretty bird’ and ‘turkey bird’ (I’m not so sure where that term came from). So when I saw these delightful portraits from Leila Jeffreys I was instantly won over.

  4. Artist: V A Graham

November 22, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog recently and the graphics were terribly ancient looking yet so nostalgic.  The work of Veronica Graham utilizes video game graphics to create wonderfully detail maps depicting various landscapes and territories.

  5. Artist: Jeff Depner

November 22, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

In this ongoing series Reconfigured Grid from painter Jeff Depner, he well reconfigures the grid forming new shapes pointing your eye in every direction. Layering and pairing colors to trick the eye; his work inspires a modern twist on Bauhaus artist Josef Albers.

  6. Artist: Cayce Zavaglia

November 21, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Number 4 on my Life List is to embroider a self portrait, so you can image my excitement when I was introduced to the work of Cayce Zavaglia! Trained in painting, Cayce utilizes her background to embroider these painstakingly realistic portraits from wool and silk thread. Check out the video below to see her process.

  7. Photographer: Brice Bischoff

November 21, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Ever thought about dancing in front of a camera with large sheets of brilliant colored paper? Well photographer Brice Bischoff beat you to it. Staged in front of the Bronson Caves in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, these photographs are eerie yet beautiful.

  8. Artist: Kate de Para

November 21, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Don’t be deceived by these objects, these rocks are handcrafted with handmade abaca paper and various salts adding texture and color. This is just one series from artist Kate de Para, her work explores various mediums from sculpture to drawing to photography, all capturing elements of the world around her.

  9. Artists: We Make Carpets

November 15, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

We Make Carpets is a 3-person artist group weaving temporary contemporary carpet installations from anything but thread. Using objects such as forks, clothespins, and pasta, We Make Carpets define their work as a critique on our consumer driven society.

  10. Artist: Brendan Monroe

November 15, 2012 by Erin Fletcher

Brendan Monroe paints his vision of our world with inspirations rooted in science. The quality of his painting reminds me a lot of contemporary marbling with the thick wave-like lines. I really love his little sculptures, especially the dude made up of dried paint scraps. Brendan offers a small collection of zines from his shop. I just ordered copies of IslandsIslands N. 2, and Between Here and Here; I can’t for them to arrive!
